Lily Wilson is the new UGSRP intern for the 2020 year. Lily is currently in her 2nd year of the Business commerce- Hospitality and Tourism management program at the University of Guelph. She has always been passionate about caring for the planet we live on, but being in a business major she was unaware if there were areas in this field of study that were focusing on the issue at hand. This mentality quickly changed… During her first semester at the University of Guelph Lily was enrolled in the HTM*1700 Foodservice management course. There she was introduced to the idea of sustainability in the food and beverage industry and was immediately inspired. Our lives revolve around food & beverage and while taking this course Lily was shocked to discover how little we really know or focus on this vital part of our lives. Since then she has been making the conscious effort to focus on eating and using more sustainable foods/ products, educating herself and others, supporting companies who are truly striving for a change not only in the industry but for our planet as well, and inspiring others to do the same.
During the 9th annual Symposium Lily was introduced to Cowbell Brewery. Cowbell detailed their efforts implemented within their brewery to reduce their waste water and an interest in the topic had sparked. Lily later went to work at Bench Brewery in the summer where her interest in breweries was magnified. She loved working in an actual brewery setting and getting to see all the work and innovation it takes to keep a brewery running successfully. She has decided to focus on doing a 3-part series throughout the year on 3 different breweries and their efforts in sustainability. Although the world has drastically changed in the past 7 months due to the pandemic Lily is excited to see the innovations and changes that come from these times!
